I haven’t written in a long time, so I struggled to write my Hemingway-esque “one true sentence.”
Incidentally, I got the inspiration from the perfect source: My sister… which is truly fitting for what I’m writing about.
“Home reminds me of two things: Great food and bright smiles.”

Honestly, there could not be any truer sentence than that. Some of the best memories of home are with my Veroy family. Majority of them involve trading colorful, loud, and varying stories (as a child who was, as momma put it, “delivered by the stork to a different address,” it took me a while to figure out how to swiftly “switch channels” and get myself heard over the cacophony) full of love and laughter (plus the occasional violence).
It also involved the most delicious homemade dishes cooked by momma (or kuya – you still owe me callos, buddy) or grilled by poppa. Lunches that bleed into alcohol-fueled dinners because we just couldn’t get enough of each others’ stories – no matter how repetitive – always bring a smile to my face.
It’s these delicious memories that inspired us to bring back our AMA charity events – after all, we’re positive that everyone can recall a number of fantastic meals growing up. My buddy Chef Jonas Ng and I sure do, which we’re excited to share with our audience.
The next AMA is called Home is Where The Smiles Are. We’re doing it for the benefit of Smile Train Philippines. Smile Train is the world’s largest cleft-focused organization, with a sustainable and local model of supporting surgery and other forms of essential care.

The recipes Chef Jonas will be teaching me to cook involve easy to make dishes we grew up with, and I’ll be pairing them with inexpensive, simple drinks (yes, it’s also a great opportunity to watch Chef Jonas turn red on camera again).
