Where Can Your PHP1,000 Take You?

written by Gail Sotelo September 13, 2017

If, like us, you want to reach for a glass (or two) of tipple these days (because it is our basic human right), you might be thinking, “What can I get myself to drink for a thousand pesos?”

Here are a few of our recommendations:

Beer

Right now, we just want easy access beer and thankfully, living in the land of San Miguel Beer, it is as simple as going to the nearest grocery (or convenience store) and grabbing one. At about PHP38 per can of San Miguel Pale Pilsen, one can easily get a case of 24 (plus a little pulutan on the side) for a thousand pesos.

Coffee

If you want to sober up a bit, coffee from a Toby’s Estate, Cartel, or even CBTL can set you back about PHP130 (depending on what it is… But again, a personal favourite is the Gibraltar in Toby’s). That said, you can get about 7 cups of coffee for a thousand pesos. That, or you can make some of your own at home (watch out for Chia’s coffee article which is coming up real soon!).

Wine

If you know where to look, you can get a decent bottle of red or white wine for about PHP750 (I recommend going to Wine Depot, Barcinos, S&R, or Ralph’s for this price range… They are either importers with their own stores or a grocery chain with a decent selection). A Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc or an Argentine Malbec is always a safe bet (edit: Another recommendation is to look through Winery Philippines‘ selections. They are also direct importers, and they have a gorgeous Riesling for PHP800. Added bonus: The convenience of having it delivered directly to your home).

Spirits

In fact, people could get a decent bottle of gin or vodka in the PHP900 range in Manila (with enough money left over for some Schweppes Tonic Water, which is about PHP27… It’s enough for a few glasses of gin and tonic).

I’m sure we’re missing some of your favourites in this list… Let us know your recommendations. Cheers!

Hi Gail, you missed winery.ph from your list – we’ll put a 92 point rated Riesling from a 5-star winery in your hands for ~800. Way better value than S&R or Ralphs don’t you think? see https://winery.ph/collections/wine-600-999-pesos/products/chrismont-riesling-2015
